If you are not ready for many long days in the saddle, yet you’re an outdoor person with a basic knowledge of riding and good stamina, this tour might be what you are looking for.. During three riding days your guide leads you to magnificent sights of Iceland, Geysir Hot Spring area and Gullfoss Waterfall.
Enjoy the view of glaciers in front of you while riding through a lovely birch forest and green meadows with grazing horses. You’ll travel at a comfortable pace -- enjoying “Tölt”, the special gait of the Icelandic horse as well as walk and trot . On the way to Kjóastaðir Farm you’ll visit Thingvellir National Park, a lovely spot full of both historic and geological importance.
You’ll be based at Kjóastaðir Farm in south Iceland, the home of hosts Hjalti and Åsa. They and their capable staff takes very good care of their guests and will find a horse that will suits each rider. Two nights are spent in cozy summer cottages, 2 3 rooms in each with shared facilities.

Travelers from North America leave for Iceland on an overnight flight with an early morning arrival at Keflavik Airport in Iceland.
You will arrive at Keflavik International Airport and use your voucher to take the Flybus shuttle to the BSI Bus Terminal in Reykjavik, (about a 40 minute ride). You’ll have the day to explore Iceland’s capital city. An overnight in Reykjavík is included to give you a chance to catch up after your short overnight flight.
Reykjavík Thingvellir Geysir Kjóastaðir Farm
Your outfitter will pick you up after breakfast for a pleasant bus ride, to Kjóastaðir Farm, visiting the historical site Thingvellir on your way. Once at the farm, you’ll check into your room, meet your guides and have a relaxing lunch. Your guides will tell you a bit about the Icelandic horse and its special gaits. Then you’ll get helmets and rain gear and set off for a ride along pleasant trails of the Bláskógarbyggð district towards Geysir hot spring area. You’ll get to know the Icelandic horse and the way of riding in a relaxed atmosphere, through classic Iceland countryside. It’s a perfect first day! (15 km)
Tungufljót Kjarnholt Kjóastaðir
More beautiful South Iceland today! You’ll start with a ride through a beautiful birch forest at Haukadalur valley and cross small sparkling brooks and enjoy the summer wildflowers and vegetation. Those plants will change as you As you ride up to Haukadalsheiði heath where you’ll have a great view of mountains and glaciers in the interior! (20km)
Kjóastaðir Gullfoss Kjölur Trail Reykjavík
You’ll leave the farm and head off towards the majestic canyon Brúarhlöð where milky, glacier fed water passes through bizarre rock formations. You’ll follow the ever deepening canyon to the impressive Golden Waterfall Gullfoss. After having spent some time there you’ll saddle up again and follow the famous Kjölur highland trail for a while before you head back to the farm.(25 km). After coffee and refreshments it's time to bid farewell to horses and guides and you’ll head back to Reykjavík, arriving there about 9:30 PM. You’ll be dropped at your hotel for a last night, (while other riders go to a B&B). Here we add a bit of pampering by upgrading you to a comfortable hotel room for this last night - your own room, your own bath, all for a good nights’ sleep.
If you fly out today you'll have the morning to explore Reykjavik and then leave for the international airport at Keflavik on the shuttle bus in the early afternoon.
The Countryside Riding Adventure tour runs 4 times during the summer of 2015. Below are travel dates--and it’s easy to add a couple days on either end, if you want to see a bit more Iceland. Your arrival day in Iceland is always a transfer day, which allows you to rest from the short night of sleep on the flight, before you start riding on the second day.
The price includes round trip airfare, including fuel surcharge and departure taxes from Boston, New York, and Washington Dulles International Airport - ask about prices from Minneapolis, Denver, Anchorage, Seattle, and Toronto. Price also includes all transfers while in Iceland, made up beds in guest and farmhouses with shared facilities, all meals, tack and equipment while on the ride, and a pre and post tour night in a hotel in Reykjavik, with private bath, tv, internet connection, and breakfast on departure day.
*NOT included are travel insurance, meals on the day of arrival in Iceland, dinner on the last riding day after you’re returned to Reykjavik, lunch and dinner the day of departure and the cost of any extra and additional travels.
