This tour brings together some special riding routes with the comfort of the Hotel Eldhestar. You’ll travel each day to a different riding landscapet - through the meadows to the beach at Thorlakshofn, the Heidmork nature reserve, from one of Reykjavik’s best known riding clubs, the Viking valley of Thjorsadalur, and along the Volcano Hekla, which will hopefully still be asleep. You’ll have seen a lot of different parts of the country during it’s 4 days in the saddle. Then back to Reyjkavik for a last night!

Day 0:
Iceland here we come! Travelers from North America leave for Iceland on an overnight flight with an early morning arrival at Keflavik Airport in Iceland.

Day 1:
Welcome to Iceland!

Riders will arrive at Keflavik International Airport and then take the Flybus shuttle to the BSI bus terminal in Reykjavik. You can check your bags, grab some breakfast, and then set out explore a bit of Iceland's capital city. Around 5:30 PM the outfitter will pick you up at the BSI bus terminal and take you to their farm, about an hour outside of the capital. The tour group meets over dinner and is given details of the tour ahead. You’ll spend all tour nights at the comfortable Hotel Eldhestar.

Day 2:
Ölfusá to the Sea

Your first days ride is a great way to get to understand more about what makes these horses so special. After getting helmets and rain gear, you’ll have a little introduction to the horses in the paddock at the farm. Then you’ll head out across meadows, following the river Gljúfurá to the mighty Ölfusá glacial river. Here there’s a break to enjoy the panoramic view of the river delta with its black, sandy river banks, volcanic mountains which stretches all the way to the ocean. The tour continues on soft grassland along the river and through shallow water at the edge of the wide Ölfusá delta until you reach the black lava sand at the south coast. On our way we have good chances to see birds of various kinds. Once on the beach, the horses are usually ready to take a brisk spin over the hard sand, towards the fishing village Thorlákshöfn. (The tour can also start at the beach, depending on tides).

Day 3:
Heiðmörk Nature Reserve

The can will take us towards Reykjavik this morning, where we’ll see Vidadalur, one of best known riding clubs, and a frequent site for the bi-annual national meet. “Landsmót”. After a few spins on its famous oval track, you’ll we head out on the scenic trails in the adjacent nature reserve and outdoor recreational area called Heiðmörk The tour takes us through a surprisingly varied landscape of lakes, forests and lava formations, all the more surprising because you’re right on the edge of the city. Ride along the wooded shores of lake Rauðavatn to the impressive pseudo craters Rauðhólar. You’ll visit another typical Icelandic “horse village” - riding club, before driving back to the farm.

Day 4:
Thjórsárdalur Valley

Today riding takes you east to the picturesque valley Thjórsárdalur to ride in astonishing landscape formed by Iceland’s longest river Thjórsá and eruptions of the nearby volcano Hekla. The lush valley at the edge of the barren highlands with its forests, streams, soft sandy ground, bizarre volcanic structures and green hills offers an unforgettable riding experience. There will be a visit an excavated farmhouse that was buried under a layer of ash from volcano Hekla 800 years ago as well as the valley Gjáin with its small waterfalls and ponds, a hidden natural treasures like an oasis in black sand. A unique opportunity to see extraordinary landscape on horseback!

Day 5:
Volcano Hekla Deluxe

Horses and riders head further east to reach the wide, green plains east of the glacial river Rangá with the majestic volcano Hekla towering over soft hills and vast flats of black sand. This area is well known for excellent riding trails, where we enjoy our horses in smooth, fast tölt over long distances, getting them to show their best in an extraordinary environment. The view is magnificent, with Hekla in the North, the famous volcano Eyjafjallajökull and the distinctive mountain Thríhyrningur the „three horns“ in the East and the Westman Islands in the South, weather permitting.
At the end of today’s ride, there will be a stop at the farm and then you’ll return to Reykjavik for a last night in a hotel. Often riders go out to one of Reykjavik’s many good restaurants for a last dinner together, (but it's not included in the price!).

Day 6:
Home again!

The tour officially ends this morning after breakfast. You can continue exploring Iceland or, if your trip is over you can take the Flybus shuttle out to the airport later in the day. You could take a bus that will give you a few hours visit to the Blue Lagoon on the trip to the airport.
